- AUSTRALIA
- CLOVERFIELD
- THE DARK KNIGHT
- DEAR ZACHARY: A LETTER TO A SON ABOUT HIS FATHER
- FROST/NIXON
- IN BRUGES
- MILK
- SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
- WALL-E
- THE WRESTLER
This is out of the 33 films that I did manage to see, and was constructed in a highly unscientific fashion. And I fully acknowledge that Australia is deeply flawed and racist in a kitschy way, In Bruges falls apart towards the end, and Dear Zachary is a little manipulative. Still, they were good times at the theater. And all of them were better than The X-Files: I Want to Believe.
What were your favorites from 2008? Deeply flawed or otherwise.
my top ten, in order:
- let the right one in
- wall-e
- the bank job
- man on wire
- iron man
- rachel getting married
- vicky cristina barcelona
- milk
- the wrestler
- doubt
appropriately enough, i had doubts about the last slot but i gave it to doubt because the cinematography is immaculate and i bought all four key performances. but if someone were to edit together just the heath ledger scenes from the dark knight, that would have made the top ten, probably in the number two slot.
let the right one in is so far above the other nine for me that it practically deserves its own list. the first twenty minutes of wall-e is also in a class by itself.
i was surprised no comedies cracked my top ten, so honorable mentions go to forgetting sarah marshall and zack and miri make a porno for being the two best comedies i saw this year.
and not that you asked, but if i could have squeezed in one more movie each month, these are the twelve i wish i’d seen:
- jan: 4 months, 3 weeks & 2 days
- feb: in bruges
- mar: paranoid park
- apr: my blueberry nights
- jun: my winnipeg
- jul: the wackness
- aug: the girl cut in two
- sep: appaloosa
- oct: happy go lucky
- nov: quantum of solace
- dec: frost/nixon
hopefully i can catch up with most of these before it’s time to write the list for 2009.
