la restaurant week (so far)
two restaurants into this year’s restaurant week and i’ve yet to be blown away.
i realize it’s a small sample size, but the theme i’m sensing thus far is: “we’re hurting too, don’t expect much.” no pricey ingredients, tiny portions, very little bang for your buck.
ok, a caveat: my two meals so far have both been lunch, where the prices are lower....

when horoscopes go horribly wrong
maura:
“You will definitely be talking about or planning travel if you are not heading for a vacation soon. Your mind is on far-away places, romantic get-aways and trips both physical and mental. If you can’t afford to travel, spending some time online may be a good substitute.”
noooooooo
replace the word “good” with “tragic” and you’ve described my week to a t.

errol morris interviews three photo agency heads... →
documentary filmmaker errol morris asked the heads of ap, afp and reuters to each select and discuss ten significant photos from bush’s years in office.
the article is a mix of the expected and the mildly surprising, but the kicker is three absolutely jaw-dropping photos from just after the broadcast of his final address to the nation. the sequence of expressions is absolutely must-see...

best picture nominee? is that your final answer?
with slumdog millionaire poised to sweep the oscars, now seems as good a time as any to officially start the backlash.
i didn’t like slumdog millionaire.
here’s what i did like: the cinematography was at times breathtaking, and danny boyle certainly knows where to put a camera. the younger actors are not bad, though the grown-up lead seems to think all human emotion can be...

when they say "but bush kept us safe" it's like...
frangry:
Say you took a cab ride, and the driver drove like a maniac, so much so that you worried he might be drunk. In fact, he got pulled over, but the cops let him go on his way. And he got obviously lost, several times, but fiercely denied there was any problem. He kept up an incessant patter of retarded drivel throughout. The meter kept running. In the end, you didn’t so much get to your...

oh these are the people in my neighborhood
good: coming home to find the neighbors watching an academy screener of milk better: being invited in to join them and share a glass of wine (or three). best: discovering that they’ve made an enormous bowl of parmigiano reggiano and truffle salt popcorn.
i really do enjoy my life.

pbs thinks i’m times new roman.
“some call you timeless - others call you a snob. either way, you’re a class act all around. just don’t take yourself too seriously.”
i think i’m verdana trapped in the body of times new roman.
maybe if i hire a personal trainer, i can work off those serifs.

the 10 movies released last year that i really...
lizlet:
AUSTRALIA
CLOVERFIELD
THE DARK KNIGHT
DEAR ZACHARY: A LETTER TO A SON ABOUT HIS FATHER
FROST/NIXON
IN BRUGES
MILK
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
WALL-E
THE WRESTLER
This is out of the 33 films that I did manage to see, and was constructed in a highly unscientific fashion. And I fully acknowledge that Australia is deeply flawed and racist in a kitschy way, In Bruges falls apart towards...

real-life quicktime event
question: if you run into the host of one of your favorite extended basic cable TV shows at the supermarket, is it ok to buy them a bottle of bourbon in appreciation?
i just opted for the quick “i love your show” and handshake, but i’m thinking i might have made the wrong call. and if it matters, it was going to be woodford reserve.
